London: England wicketkeeper Matt Prior has pleaded for another chance to open the batting in the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka after scoring just 15 and 21 runs as Andrew Strauss’ opening partner in this tournament.
Prior is frustrated with his inability to score big runs for England at the top of the order after getting chance as a World Cup opener. He struggled in the one-dayers in Australia this year and Kevin Pietersen was given the job instead.
Prior was promoted back to the top of the order when Pietersen went home for a hernia operation. Now his place is under pressure from Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara, The Sun reports.
Prior said: “I love opening. It gives you the opportunity to bat for 50 overs and get a big score for your team.”
“It hasn’t gone to plan so far and that’s a frustration. I don’t feel far away and I’ve no doubt a big score is around the corner. If one or two things go my way, I’m certain I’ll get some runs. I’m bewildered by not being able to score many as an opener,” he said.
“I’ve opened with success in county cricket - I know this is a step up - and scored hundreds in Tests. I have belief in my ability and we’re now in the quarterfinals. That’s very exciting because, if I do open, I have the opportunity to play an innings to put us into the World Cup semi-finals,” Prior added. (ANI)
