The finding is based on a study of shoppers conducted by Debenhams. The retailer calculated how the age of the consumer is directly linked to the height of the waistband. The study showed that as boys enter their teenage years, trouser waistbands plunge a full five inches from the hips, allowing their jeans to barely cover their modesty. The look sees rebellious teenagers wear their trousers' waistband around their crotch. However, once a young man starts looking for a job the waistband climbs returning to the natural waist position from the age of 27, as he settles down in a job and a relationship. They then stay at this level for the next 12 years, until - at the very fist hints of middle age - it starts to rise. By the age of 45, trousers will be at least two inches above the natural waist position. This figure increases significantly past that age of 50. They tend to peak five inches above the waist by the time they hit their 57th birthday. This is just seven inches below the armpits. As old age approaches, men's waistlines shrink, allowing them to lower the height of their trousers. "These results will help our designers produce trousers which take body shape into account, enabling all men to look good regardless of age," the Telegraph quoted Paul Baldwin at Debenhams as saying. "However, our hardest task continues to be persuading men to confront the fact that their trouser waistbands have risen. From our experience, men still prefer to assume that their trousers no longer fit because their legs have suddenly grown," he added.
